A return which has just been presented to Parliament shows the number of applications for small loans under the Advances to Settlers Act, and the amount authorised.

Applications for loans up to £IOO totalled £3,333. The amount applied for was £298,530 and the amount authorised was £230,204. For loans from £IOO to £3OO there were 2,627 applications for £649,482, the amount authorised being £541,734. For loans from £3OO to £SOO, there were 1,097 applications, for £522,475, the amount authorised being £485,930.

Up to 31st July last, the sum of £18,037 3s lid was collected in fees by solicitors from borrowers or intending borrowers under the Government Advance to Settlers Act.

The amounts for the various provincial districts were ; Auckland —£3209 13s 9d. Taranaki —£2864 14s id. Hawkes Bay—£ss3 Is lOd. Wellington—£s33o 16s 31. Marlborough—£ss3 3s Id Nelson-£3OB 15s 6d. Westland—£lß2 7s 7d. • Canterbury—£lo99 2s 7d. Otago—£lß3l Us 3d. Southland—£2lo3 Is Bd.
