A question of considerable importance was raised in the House by Mr Field, who suggested the advisability, in the interests of the protection of the colony against possible invasion, of placing all topographical plans and sections of the colony under control of the defence authorities. He further suggested that a corps of engineers should be formed and instructed in topographical survey work. The Premier said lie would make enquiries, and as to the engineer corps he would be happy to accept the service, of any company formed for that purpose
