GOVERNMENT RAILWAY CLASSIFICATION.

Dissatisfaction was expressed by the representatives of the railway servants with the Government Railway Classification Bill, and as the result of several conferences between them and the Minister of Railways the Bill introduced last week has been withdrawn, and another pleasure substituted for it,
The alterations in the schedule in the Railway Classification Bill (No 2) as Compared with the first Bill introduced this session arc as follows; The definition of the signalmen entitled to one shilling per day additional in clause 1 is amended to read “signalmen in charge of important signal cabins.” In sub-clause 3, pointers, skrimmers 8/6 to 9/6 is omitted.
Improvers, who have not served five years as apprentices, 7s to 8s is omitted, and the following inserted : Junior tradesmen, who have served apprenticeship in New Zealand railway workshops of less than five years until completion of five years’ service, 7s 6d to Bs. In sub-clause 5 sailmakers and rivetters are omitted.
Junior cleaners and rivet boys 3s to 3s Gd is omitted, thus leaving the minimum pay for this class of work at 4s. Painters and plumbers -8s 6d to 9s Gd is omitted from sub-class 5 and inserted in sub-class 4, with a maximum of 10s Gd.
Gangers in charge of large cards (10s; is added to sub-class 9.
