Fatal Accident. Christchurch, October 19,
William McKay, an old resident of Oxford and manager of the Woodstock station was found dead on the road this morning not far from the station. Apparently he had got out to open the gate on the road and the horse must have Started and he was knocked down and run over. The horse and cart were afterwards found at the bottom of a c:iff over which they had fallen.

C. W. Kerr, managing director of the Evening Star, died this morning of pleurisy.
Native Scholarships.

The Inspector of Native Schools has proposed to the trustees of the late Sir Donald McLean regarding the scholarships at Leante Native College that some of the money available —£103 annually—should bo diverted to certain scholarships at the Maori primary schools in the colony. It has been decided, however not to make any alteration in McLean scholaship conditions so far as the coming examinations are concerned.
Escaped Prisoners Wbllinuton 1 This Day. John Ramsay and Frank King, who attempted to escape from the prison gang on Friday were this morning sentenced to six months and nine months imprisonment respectively. Breach of Shiping Act.
Auckland This Day. George Lambert was fined £5 and costs for carrying 80 tons of deck cargo on a steamer from Auckland to Wellington, which is 19 tons in excess of amount allowed by statute. Taro Children Drowned. Ciiiustchuech, Oct 21. •

found dead in a hut at Toko six miles from here. His brains were blown oY, A gun was lying near by. He is supposed to have commitood suicide by pulling the trigger with his foot. He lived at Toko for throe years, and followed the occupation of bootmaker.
