Serious Trouble Threatened

Rousseau informed the Miners’ Federation that the minimum wage was only fixed by interested parties. The Chamber of Deputies would consider the question of workmen’s pensions as an administrative matter. The enquiry will be open in regard to the eight hours work. Rousseau is keeping four army corps in readiness in the event of disturbances following, the Miners Federation having threatened a general strike in November Colliery owners are fortifying mines.

Nearly two inches of rain fell in half an hour last evening, flooding the low lying suburbs, in some instances to a dcptli of three feet.

The gunboat Lizard returned from China, and leaves for New Zealand after refitting.
The Mail Service.
The Herald conrmenting on the New Zealand House adopting the proposals of the Intercolonial and Vancouver services says: Sydney is directly interested in them. The State will bo glad to give all possible help to New Zealand in the matter.
