TESTIMONIAL TO THE EXMAYOR OF NAPIER.

Mr G. H. Swan, ex-Mayor of Napier, was to-day presented with a purse of sovereigns and au illuminated address from tho Municipal Council by the people of Hawkea Bay on the occasion of his leaving Napier to take up his residence in Hawera.
The Mayor in making the presentation referred to the public spirit shown oy Mr Swan, during the 37 years he had lived in Napier, for 24 years of which time he bad sat in' the Council as councillor for 16;} years without intermission. He had also represented Napier in Parliament and had acted as chairman of the Charitable Aid Board and Hospital Board for many years. He had for 17 years been a member of the Harbour Board and in every capacity had rendered the most valuable services to the Borough. The esplanade of which Napier was so justly proud and many other works were monuments of Mr Swan’s unceasing efforts for the benefit of the town. The presentation had been spontaneously contributed by the people not only of Napier, but of Hawkes Bay and was tee best testimony that could be given of how Mr Swan’s services had been appreciated and on behalf of the people of Hawkes Bay he wished Mr Swan the greatest prosperity and health in his new sphere. In responding Mr Swan said ho hoped In a few years Napier would give him the pleasure of owning their finished breakwater, which he considered was the only thing wanting to make Napier progress as it ought to do.
