In the Legislative Council yesterday the Mortgages of Land Bill passed its final stages ; the Arbitration and Conciliation Amendment and the Money Lenders Bills were read a second time. THE ESTIMATES. On the House meeting it went into Committee of Supply for the further consideration of the estimates. The Vote for Customs and Marine Departments was under discussion- the whole of the kftertoon. Mr Fowld’s moved the total vote be reduced £1 as an instruction to Government that all officers over the stipulated term of service and age should bo retired. This was agreed to on the voices. APPROPRIATIONS. Votes for the Customs and Marine Departments and Stamp and Deeds Departments, passed without alteration after considerable discussion. The Education Department estimates gave rise to a considerable discussion. Mr Ell moved that the vote be reduced by £1 as an indication that the Minister holding the portfolio of Education should be a member of the lower house. This was lost by 23 to 17. The total vote was agreed to and progress was reported. The House rose at 3 20 a m.
