Hunter was sentenced to 12 months for theft of £BO from Peebles of Hawera. The Chief Justice ordered £SO found on the prisoner to be handed to the District Court at Hawera, to be distributed for the benefit of young Peebles, whose father plight squander it,
Snow and Frost. Ashburton, This Day. A heavy fall of snow took place on Saturday near the hills and lighter in the town, and there was frost last night in some parts of the country. Lambing is nearly over and a serious loss is not anticipated. Bank of New Zealand Theft. Wellington, This Day. The case of Thomas Conn, charged with having stolen £7O from the Bank of New Zealand in July, 1899, was again before the Magistrate to day. The Crown Prosecutor intimated that owing to the absence from the colony of a material witness for the Crown, ho did not propose to call evidence. The accused was accordingly discharged. Nelson News. Nelson, This Day. News has been received from the Authors’ Society that Chatto and Windui have accepted and are publishing immediately Mr. A. A. Grace’s “ Tales of a dying race,” being a collection of Maori stories and traditions. This will supplement Mr. Grace’s former book of Maori land stories. Some of the tales previously appeared in the Sydney Bulletin. The weather is very unseasonable lately. There was a sharp frost this morning.
George Thomas Boss, of Wellington, was sentenced to three months to-day on two charges of false pretences by means of valueless cheques in Nelson in August.
