During the journey- to Auburn prison, Czolgosz’regretted his crime and pitied the widow.
Hundreds of persons congregated outside the gaol made a rush for the murderer with the intention of lynching him.
The guards with difficulty protected their charge and drew their revolvers. Plows were exchanged. Czolgosz was hustled in and collapsed on the floor of the prison, shrieking in abject terror.
