Melbourne, Sept 20. A deputation of merchants urged upon Mr Barton the disabilities of Victoria through not accepting the agreement with the Eastern Extension Company, and asked him to enter into an agreement on behalf of the Commonwealth so that all States may participate in the reduction of rates.

Mr Barton promised that as soon as the tariff was disposed of he would give the cable question his earnest consideration.

Immigration from BessarabiaBrisbane, Sept 20. Representatives of German colonists from Bessarabia, South Russia, interviewed the Premier in reference to immigration to their colony, which was very large, consisting chiefly of GermanSaxons, to Queensland. It is understood that the Government are offering every encouragement to them to come.

Owing to the tick restrictions against Queensland cattle and the late drought, the supply of fat animals is very limited. At to-day’s markets the prices were the highest for fifteen years. There has been a rise of £X per head since Thursday, bullocks selling up to £l6 10s. A further advance is expected. Beef is proportionately advancing.
