NAPIER SUPREME COURT.

Napier, Sept. 18. At the Supreme Court to-day,- George Woodward, late clerk to the Weber Road Board, pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing the sum of £ls 15s, the property of the Board was remanded, pending the the report of the'probation officer. William Higgins, charged with assaulting Cornelius Brosnabau and stealing from him a cheque and other articles, was found “ not guilty.”

A charge was preferred against Charles John Hardy, of having in Juno 1899, when acting as assistant to his wife, who was matron of the children’s home, indecently assaulted a girl named Jessie M‘Lean, an inmate of that institution, who was under the age of 16 years, but after hearing the evidence of the girl M'Lean, and another girl, who both gave very conflicting statements under crossexamination, the judge asked the Crown prosecutor whether in the face of the very contradictory evidence of the two principal witnesses, it was worth while going on with the case. The Crown Prosecutor agreed with the Judge and the case was by consent withdrawn without the defence being called up>a
