Beceived this day at 9 50 a in. Melbourne, August 28,
In the Assembly the Budgat showed that the Commonwealth celebrations cost £BO,OOO, but the increased revenue arising therefrom is more than the balanced sums. The railway revenue was £3,309,000 the largest sinco 1891. The deficic on the railways for the year being £236,000 and the accumulated deficit £2,300,000 which was sot aside the compensation received from the Federal Government extinguishing this. The income tax is steadily increasing, and the year just ended gave £220,000. For the present year the estimated revenue is £6,963,000 and the expenditure £7,192,000. £14,000 of this deficit was caused by the demands for Old Ago Pensions, the balance was accounted for by the railway ; £50,000 of the previous year's surplus was devoted to paying off the Treasury bonds, the balance was used to reduce the estimated deficit to £143,000. If the anticipated tariff returns from the Commonwealth are realised, the deficit will be turned to a credit balance of £12,000, but if not Parliament will have to be called together before the end of the financial year to impose additional taxation. The old age pensions expenditure is estimated at £225,000 instead of £300,000. The reduction is effected by levolling the pensions all round to seven shillings weekly. The total incroascd expenditure for tho year including transferred services was £173,000.
