FOOTBALL MATCHES

(ran PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

N. S. Wales y Queensland.

Brisbane, August 28. In the football match New South Wales beat Queensland by 21 points to 13. N. Z Reps, v Wellington.

Welunct-n, August 28.

About 1000 people turned out to see the New Zealand team play a practice match against a local fifteen. The latter was not strong, as a number of men could not get leave. Burt and O' Bricn filled the places of Drake and Cross in the reps' team. There was a chilly wind blowing, and with its help Wellington did well enough in the first spell, scoring 5 points—a goal kicked by Wallace from a try—to 8. Wood scored for New Zealand between the posts and kicked a goal, and Lver Smith gave a specimen of ono of his famous sprints, and secured a try. Before this he had followed up a well-judged kick on his own, and was only baulked of a score by the ball crossing the dead line. During the interval Duncan experimented with his scrimmagers in various formations, and more satisfactory results were obtained. On resuming, four more tries were scored by Allen (2), Smith and Duncan, and Wood kicked two fine goals from them, making a total of 24 to 5. The local men made the game vigorous and rallied, but were always driven oil' in the end, and could not add to (heir original score. Some of the .selected players were very much at sea, particularly the fullback, aad would bo ail tho better for some more practice, but trio team looks quite strong enough to give a good account of the Sydney men, especially if the ground is wet on Saturday. Canterbury y N. S. Wales. Cheistchurch, August 28. The Canterbury-New South Wa.le3 football match was played to-day. The game was very uninteresting in the first spell during which Ayers scored a try for Canterbury. In the second spell, the play was much faster, the backs of both sides taking a hand. Phillips added two more tries for Canterbury, Bice converting one, and Shortland gained a try for N. S. Wales, converting. Canterbury won by 11 points to 5.

Hawkes Bay y. Otago.

Dunedin, August 28

Tho football match Hawke's Bay v. Otago was won by Hawke's Bay by 5 points to 3. Tito game was the most interesting of the series here, from a spectator's p rint of view, being fast and open from start to finish. There was n ot much science in some of tho play, which was scrambly, but the bold tactics of the visitors whacked the leather hard and often regardloss of consequences, were rewarded, and strive as the Otago players would they could not cross the lines of the visitors a second time.
