Committed for theft. Wellington, August 26. Percy E. Whittle was committed for trial on a charge of robbery at flatchs' shop. Builders' Conference. At the Builders' Conference it wa9 decided to wait on the Premier and point out t'ne unnecessary difficulties created iWfte building trade under the Amending Factories Bill, also to object strongly to the passing of the provisions in regard to those employed in worshops and the hours of ordinary work and overtime, as these clauses clash with the Arbitration award under which the traders are working. The Minister of Native Affairs. Napibe, Aug 26.
The Hon. James Carroll, Native Minister, arrived from Gisborne this morning. He addressed a Maori meeting at Hastings in connection with a levy made by the local Maori Council of 2s per head for expenses of administration to which some of the natives objected. The Native Minister explained that the levy was to cover the expenses of sanitation in Maori pahs.
The natives expressed themselves satisfied with the explanation, and agreed topay the levy. The Minister leaves for Wellington by express train to-morrow.
Warship Movements. Wellington, This Day. The H.M.S. Archer arrived from Lyttelton this morniug. Diyorce Court. In the Divorce Court in the case of Janet S. Clark, the Judge granted a decree nisi for disolution of marriage with Sydney Charles Clark on the grounds of desertion and adultery. A Fatal Accident. Woodville, This Day. The infant son of P. Kelly, Borough ranger, two years old, fell into a creek. The mother jumped into the pool, and when the neighbors reached the spot was under the water insensible. Some difficulty was experienced in getting her out. She was unconscious for twelve hours after. All attempts to resuscitate her baby failed.
Builders' Conference. Wellington, This Day. At the Builders' Conference a resolution was passed approving of the conditions of contract in use at the four centres and advising other associations to adopt them, also recommending the associations who have conditions inserted in contracts stipulating compensation to be paid to the lowest tenderer in the case in which work is not gone on with. The question of contractors liens on work contracted for was referred to a committee for report. Suicide. Chbistohubch, This Day. James McNaughton, shepherd at St Albans was found at 9 30 this morning in his bedroom with hia throat cut. It is supposed to be a case of suicide.
