Kanaka Labour. Brisbane, August 20. The Premier, in referring to the proposal to stop Kanaka immigration after five years, stated that the time was of very little use, if however, the Eight Hon Mr Barton made it ten years, this ctato would let him alone.
Victorian Loans. Melbourne, August 20. The public subscribed a little over ,£20,000 of the £IOO,OOO three per cent Government guaranteed debentures. The account of the Commissioners’ Savings Bank will bo used as advances to farmers and the balance alloted to the Commissioners at a minimum of £96. The whole loan averaged £96 Os ll|d. Employment of Lascars. Sydney, August 20. A deputation representing the Labour Party asked the Premier to assist an interstate prptest to the Federal Government against the employment of Lascars on the subsidised mail steamers and urged the unfitness of Lascars in time of danger, and the inconsistency of the Federal Government in suppressing Kanaka labour whilo permitting Lascars on the mail boats.
Mr Sec said that the deputation had his fullest sympathy. If necessary he would call a conference of Premiers on the subject.
