Wants to be relieved’ from the
Mining Act.
Wellington, August 19,
J. W. Walker, popularly known us Long Drive Walker, waited on the Minister of Mines this morning with a proposal that 640 acres in the North-East Thames goldfields should be taken out as an area. He wanted power to float a company in London ■ or elsewhere and be entirely relieved from the operations of the Mining Act. Walker offered in the event or terms beintr accepted to give tho Government 1| per cent on profits, tho Thames Hospital a like amount, and the employ of labour to the extent of live thous and a year.
The Minister, who seemed to bo tiken by surprise with so model a request, a Iced Walker to submit the prop isul of writing for tho Cabinet, and consideration to give effect to whut he asked would, ho aded, necessitate an Act of Parliament.
