Unauthorised expenditure for the year ending March 31st last, amounts according to the return just presented to Parliament was £107,336. Items of general interest are expenses connected with the charter of vessels for conveyance of remounts and produce etc., to South Africa £11,815; for the despatch of Federal Contingent to Sydney occasioning inauguration of the Commonwealth, including pay of the Contingent, steamer fares, uniforms, rifle team etc., £2,779 ; expenses in connection with the reception of Imperial Troops, including accommodation for officers, steamer fares, travelling expenses, horse hire etc., £1515; railway plant and material £5622.
