NATIONAL MEMORIAL TO SIR JOHN M’KENZIE.

[PRRPBKSS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, August 13. A meeting of members of both branches of the Legislature was held to-day to consider a proposal to erect a national memorial to late Sir John M'Kenzie. Major Steward presided and there was a large attendance. A considerable sum was raised in the room and it was intimated that the Cabinet would give a joint donation to the fund. A committee was appointed with power to add to their number to carry out the necessary arrangements to suitably commemorate the memory of the late Minister by memorial or otherwise. Major Steward was elected chairman of the committee, the Hon Lee Smith, treasurer, and the Hon J. Eigg secretary. A proposal was made by the Hon Lee Smith that the memorial should take the form of a cairn to be erected on top of Puketapu Hill, and was generally approved. It was also suggested that a bust of John M’Kenzie should be placed in the Parliamentary lobby. It was decided that prominent public men in other parts of the colony be approached with a view to their names being added to the committee so that the memorial should be national and not a party one.
