(per press association.) Trades and Labor Disputes. Wellington, This Day. A dispute referred to the Conciliation Board at the instance of the Wellington Typographical Union has been fixed for bearing on the 26th inst. 74 newspaper proprietors and master printers in the industrial district have been cited. The claim is in regard to hand compositors, for whom the weekly wage is £3 5s for day hand £3 12s 6d fpr night. The employees demanded that the piece rate be not less than Is Id per 1000 ens.
The Conciliation Board continued its hearing of the iron and brass moulders’ dispute to-day. The employers intimated that owing to the non-conciliatory attitude of the Union they would withdraw from the concessions agreed to on the previous day.
Booth, a manufacture of agricultural machinery at Christchurch, said that the decreasing hours of labour and the increasing of wages would help the trade on the down grade, along which it had already started. Bates and others for damages for the loss of plaintiff’s son, who was accidentally killed at the sports at Normanby last Boxing Day. The boy was standing near the shooting gallery when a pellet entered his stomach. The Judge held that defendants (the sports’ committee) were guilty of not making enquiry as to the capability of the man in charge of the gallery not keeping supervision over the shooting. Kettle hold that he was bound by the decision of Justice Williams in the case of George North. Otago A and P Association, and gave judgment for plaintiff on the main issue, but reserved his decision as to the amount of damages. It is likely that defendants will go to the Court of Appeal. The Newtown Park Enquiry. The military Board of enquiry has concluded its investigations of the Newtown Camp scandal and will report to the Government. The Supreme Court Sittings, Auckland, This Day. At the Supreme Court, George Fitzherbert was sentenced to five yeaas hard labor for forgery, and two years for theft to run concurrent. Justice Conolly said the accused was one of the most hardened criminals ever before the Court. Adolph Hews was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment with hard labor for forgery and false pretences.
