A HOKITIKA GROWL.

“ The local police,” says the Guardian are displaying a rather sudden interest in •what they conceive to be their duty. On Saturday evening the officer on the Revell Jitreet beat showed unwonted energyin his efforts to make people “move on.’’ To he effective it would probably be as well were the constable instructed to be a little more discriminate. It is all very well to ■cope with the “ small boy” and larrikin nuisance in an active manner, but when respectable citizens meet for a week- end ■chat casually in the street on a Saturday evening, there’does not appear to be any necessity for the gentlemen in blue, to ■especially interest themselves. Even a bery of young ladies, probably discussing the latest in spring fashions for the morrow’s wear, were victims to the energetic police officer. Unfortunately traffic in our streets is not so congested as to require these special attention from the police, and probably, there are other channels, where more useful work can be done, if surplus energy were turned in the directions, which by the way, are at times lather self-apparent.” We really don’t see what mors right a respectable citizen has to block the street than a small boy. At the same time the idea of Bevell street traffic being impeded by a few residents on the street is rather ridiculous; Evidently the man in blue has yet to get his first lesson in diplomacy.
