OUR KUMARA LETTER.
[OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
A cribbage tournament between teams repesenting the Kuniara Fire Brigade and the Catholic Band, took place on Tuesday evening, and resulted in a victory for the Brigade by 6 games to 2. Messrs F. Smith, C. Gebhardt, G. Burger, A. Foot, S. Beuyon, W. Benyon, E. Mulvihill and J. McEwin, represented the I Brigade, while Messrs Henry Burger, Herman Burger, B. Bretnond, T. Fogarty, J. Flanagan, J. McDiarmia, T. Bouse, and H. Pickett did battle for the band. A very e tjovable evening was spent, and as a result a return match is being i>rranged for to take place shortly. It seems strange that some such reunions had not been put into practice before, as they tend to promote sociability and goodfellowship. also variation to our humdrum existence, There are other means of promoting sociability besides the abjve. and now and again wo are awakened from our reverie by some such events. As for instance, when any of our young friends realise the inutility of striving to stifle the voice that cries aloud in the words, "It is not good for man to be alone, " and decided upon adopting tbe co-operative principle, say what ono will, it does arouse an interest and glow of joy that seems to radiate from a centre, otherwise why such a rush to front doors to obtain a fleeting glance at a gaily decorated carriage and prancing pair that aro always coincident with this transition of Btate. In some instances this interest arises doubtless from a very natural desire to see what things will bo liko when it oomes our turn. i
All these essentials viz-The young man with a resolve ami tho partner of his joys etc., the carriage, the prancing steeds, and the interested crowd, etc., etc., were in evidence, when at Holy Trinity Church, Mr James Morgan, second son of the late Mr J. Morgan of this town, and Miss Elizabeth Gray, daughter of Mr Neil Gray of Tore Terracs, StufLrcl, wore made one by the Rev. E. Whitehouse. My descriptive powers are not equal to tho task, but it was generally conceded that the bride looked all that couid be desired on such an auspicious occasion. It but remains to heartily wish them every happiness in their future life. The friends of Constable Culinane will be glad to hear that he lias received instructions to report himself in Wellington. This will be appreciated as the Constable's health was suffering from contact with our damp climate.
I learn that Mr J. Tait, a well known resident of Dillinans Koad, underwent a severe operation at the hands of Dr Scott for the removal of a growth on the lower lip. The patient at latest advice was progressing favourably.
The Young Men's Club Library has received another welcome addition to its shelves in the shape of 60 fresh volumes brought over by the Rev Mr Thompson from Christchur'oh. The books are suited to overy taste and are well selected. This Club certainly deserves a large measure of support in recognition of its efforts to further the interests and cater for the tastes of the reading public of the district. A meeting of the Jockey Club was held last evening at which the tender of John Lawrence, Westbrook, was accepted, it being t'-.e lowest for the works of grubbing and also for renewing culverts. Plans and estimates for the grand stand were submitted by Mr H Johnson and formallv approved of. The matter of dealing it finally was left over till after the annual meeting.
