CHINESE LABOR ON DREDGES.
A public meeting was held in the Oddfellow's Hall, Stafford, at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, for the purpose (says the West Coast TimesJ of protesting against the action of Mr Bitchie, contractor for the erection, &c. of the Stafford-Waimea Creek Dredge, in employing Chinese labor to excavate the dam for the floating of the pontoons.
The Chairman explained the purpose for which the meeting was called and, invited discussion on the subject. After some discussion it was resolved " That a petition, protesting against the employment of Chinese labour in connection with dredges and other works, be got up and sent to the contractor.
Eesolved that Messrs C. P. Heil, C, Jeanes, and W. C. Taylor be appointed a sub-committee to draw up the petition for signatures. The meeting then terminated with a hearty vote of thanks to Mr J. A. Jeanes for his services.
