Hon. John M'Kenzie called to the Legislative Council. Wellington, May 18. The Hon. John M'Kenzie has been summoned to the Legislative Council. Hon. Carroll in the Hospital. The Hon. Jas. Carroll who has been confined to his bed at his hotel for some days with a severe affection of the throat was removed to a private hospital to-day. Divorce Conrt. In the divorce case Snook v Snook, a wife's petition which has been before Judge Edwards for four days, the jury found for the petitioner entering a decree.

Discontented Railway Workers. Some days ago a ballast-gang employed on the Government railways near Palmerston North struck for certain concessions in wages. The Acting-Minister of Railways has decided that in view of the necessity- for maintaining discipline in the service, the men who struck cannot be again taken on to replace those afterwards emyloyed. In consideration, however, of the fact that they may have been injudiciously advised they will not bo debarred from employment when future vacancies have occurred.

Gale and Damage.

The most violent gale experienced for years has raged since midnight. There was a brilliant display of sheet lightning accompanied b> heavy thunder which lasted for two hours. Attempted Murder and Suicide Napier, This Day.

"Walter Smith, who created a sensation on the 27th ult. by stabbing his wife and attempting to shoot himself, lias recovered from the effects of the wound, and appeared at the Magistrate's Court this morning charged with wounding his wife with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and with attempted suicide. The accused was remanded until to-day. Fatal Occident.

A Maori boy named Mangeri Keela, aged 1-1, was killed at Mahia last night by being thrown from his horse.
