[pee press association] “ There is no Place Like Home.”
Wellington. May 11
The troopers landed at 2.15 p.m., in drenching rain, and paraded in the wharf shed. The band played “ See the conquering hero comes.” The Hons. Mills, Carroll, Hall-Jones, Sir Arthur Douglas, Cols. Newall and Somerville, Major Owen and officers of the garrison were present. Despite the rain some three or four thousand, including a largo number of ladies, assembled on the wharf, and cheered the men heartily. The Premier announced that ho had extended the men the privilege of telegraphing free to their friends, and also said that the Blenheim, Nelson and West Coast men would leave here by the Tutanekai to-morrow (Sunday) afternoon. The Gisborne and Napier men would proceed homo by tbe steamer leaving on Monday afternoon, and those from the West Coast of this Island would go by special train on Monday morning. Too Aucklanders also proceed, as far as New Plymouth, in the same train.

The members of the contingents recently returned who belonged to the Hawing Clubs were entertained last evening. Sergt Scott, in the course of a speech, referred to the indignation felt at the misstatements made concerning Colonel Robin. "While surprised and indignant ho could say there was not an atom of truth in them. Speaking for the Second Contingent be would say that if Colonel Craddock asked them to go back to-morrow they would go with him first, but if he did not ask and Colonel Robin did they would willingly go with him. Ho could not find language to express bis indignation ; Col Eobin treated them like men and they had the greatest respect for him. Sergt, Wright endorsed Sergt. Scott’s remarks, and said that Col. Robin was a strict disciplinarian, and if any man was guilty of pointing, he came down very heavy upon him, which might account in some measure for the birth of the statement.
Sergt M’Donald and Trooper Haydon warmly endorsed their comrades remarks.
