CONGRATULATING THE PREMIER.
In the Assembly meeting of the Otago Knights of Labor last week the following address to the Hon. the Premier was pio : posed by Bro. J. M’l'ndoe, seconded by Bro. Myers, and unanimously agreed to-
—“This assembly hereby desire to convey to you its sincere and hearty congratul itions on the completion of your eight conseautive years as Premier of New Zealand —a period unparalleled in the history of any colony under the British Grown ; a period during which many vicissitudes have occurred, some of them fraught with supreme danger to the State, which, however, by the foresight, ability, and energetic action of yourself and c Leagues in the Government, were met or avoided; on introducing and carrying into effect bold measures of policy, making a direct departure from the old grooves on which our destiny had been drawn, and thus raising the great mass of people to their rightful platform of equality, and which, although experimental, have proved in every case to he eminently sueeesslul; I ;.iul also in your prompt action in meeting- emergencies created by Imperial relationship; also convey the record of their profound and unaffected sympathy with you on the base, dastardly, and unwarranted attacks made on your personal honor as a man, the assaults and impuguings on your integrity and straightforwardness as a legislator and administrator during your long tenure of olllce by your opponents, hut which have rebounded with crushing effect on themselves, thus placing you on a higher pedestal than if they had never been uttered. And, further, express the Hope that you may long . ho spared to fill the high position you now occupy with the entire confidence of the great majority of your follow-colonists, the onerours and difficult duties which 3ou have discharged with such distinguished ability, and that under your guidance the colony will become increasingly prosperous.”
