POSTAL NOTES.
The money orders issued during the first quarter of the year numbered 95,118 for £312.699 0s Cd, against 85,428 for £298,196 5s 7d in the first quarter of 1900 The paid orders numbered 691,843 for £278,177 10,i 9d against 65,929 for £263,832 Is Id last year. Compared with a year ago there is an increase of 23 in the number of money-order offices open, the figures being 463 against 440. The statement of the discount-stamp transactions for the first quarter of the year shows that the value of the stamps sold amounted to- £159 15s, and the amount redeemed 17s. The discount stamps unsold on the 31st March were valued at £622 15s. No discount stamps were sold at Greymouth, Hokitika, Nelson, and Oamaru. In the Wellington postal district £6O worth of discount stamps were sold, but only 7s of this was redeemed.
The Post Office Savings Banks statement for the March quarter of the year shows that 12,907 accounts were opened and 8844 closed, the number of deposits being 9,2741 and the withdrawals 58,272. The deposits for the quarter totalled £1,141,258 5s sd, and the withdrawals £1,056,024 16s 6d, leaving the excess of deposits over withdrawals at £85,233 8s lid, as against £93,231 18s lOd a year ago. There was an excess of withdrawals over deposits at Blenheim, Hokitika, Thames, and Westport.
