FLOODS IN SOUTH WESTLAND.

(west coast times.)

One of the largest floods ever known in the Waiho district happened on the 16th and 17th inst. The Waiho river overflowed its banks near the long wire bridgo doing considerable damage to Batson's garden and paddocks carrying tbo larger portion of the paling fence, also barbed wire fences some distance down tho flat and there were two feet of water flowing through the kitchen. All preparations were made to leave tho house and get on to the high terrace'. 9 There was also considerable damage done on the south side of the river carrying away a largo portion of the terrace, including about 70t"t of Luke Bros, tunnel with all tools, boxes, truck, etc. A little down the river. Mr Snow and Elder lost the whole of their boxes and tools including the gold for last week's work. The claim below this held by Irwin and another also lost everything. In a very few hours tho Waiho Flat was converted into a rapid river. There are a few slips on the new portion of tho Lake road also- two level crossings in a dangerous state, one is very bad, I think. Had it been a culvert, which was necessary probably this would not / have happened.
