Found Drowned. Christchdrch, April 14.
This morning a lad, fourteen years of age, named William Anspach, was found dead in a drain in Woolston Borough. The ovidence at the inquest showed that deceased was subject to fits and a verdict of accidentally drowned was returned with a rider calling the attention of the local body to the dangerons state of the drain. A Burglar Caught. Wellington, April 14. On an alarm given at midnight on Saturday by the night watchman at Nathan and Co. the police surrounded the building and unearthed a man, named Alfred Burrell, who had evidently broken in and stolen a quantity of tobacco. His confederate escaped. Government Pension. Welling*on, This Day. The Home Government has granted a pension of £6O a year to the widow, and £l2 10s to each of the two children of Lieut. Berry, of the Third Contingent; this is in addition to a similar amount granted by the New Zealand Government. It means a total of £l7O per year. Bank of New Zealand. Wellington, This Day. The report and balance-sheet to be submitted at the annual meeting of the Bank of New Zealand, will, it is announced, show the profits for the year to be just closed at about £50,000 more than last year's. It is also stated that
the whole assets can be shown to be a profit on the earning with the immediate prospect of a substantial dividend being declared if the general prosperity of the country is continued for another year. Athletic Gathering. Auckland. This Day. The Auckland Amateur Athletic Cycle Club has decided to apply tohave the next New Zealand Championship held at Auckland, between December 21st and New Year. The Australasian championships are to be held at the centre appointed for the first named gathering. Highway Robbery. Christchurch, April 15. An elderly lady returning home to Papanui between 8 and 9 o'clock at night was accosted by a man who demanded her purse. Noticing a bright steel object in his hand she compliod and handing over her purse, jewellery and even sleeve links and parcel of clothing she was carrying. Dunedin Mayoralty.

The following sentences were passed by the Chief Justice this morning, upon prisouers who had pleaded guilty at tho Magistrates Court:— James Hart, forgery 18 months hard labor ; Robert Walker', forgery, 18 months. The Chief Justice suspended for t.wo years tho discharge from bankruptcy of James Patterson tailor, Stratford. Train Regulations. W. J, Hanlon, J, H. Wagg, and BH. Johnston wero each fined £1 and £1 12a coats besides 7s fare for having travelled on the Wairarapa ragular train on excurtion tickets. . An Old Pensioner.
