INDUSTRIAL UNION BANQUET.

[pee press association.]

Wellington, March 24,

The Industrial Association entertained E. Hannah and T. Ballinger, who are about to visit England at a farewell dinner last night. Among the speakers at the dinner was Chalmers, a leading cooper and manufacturer of butter boxes, who referred to the fact that enormous quantities of white pine timber are being destroyed every year. In Wairarapa alone thousands of acres had been destroyed, which if standing to-day would bo very valuable. Ho had been assured by an Argentine merchant who tried a great many varieties of American timber for butter boxes that nothing was found to suit like the New Zealand white pine. The speaker stated that in Wellington alone 100,000 cases were annually made from this timber.
