DISASTROUS FIRE AT FEILDING

■ A disastrous fire occurred at midnight, destroying the following business houses in Manchester street : !New Zealand Clothing Factory. Law. grocer. Payne's bootshop. Wiiitelaw, saddler. Williamson, tailor. Foules. watchmaker. Grantham, baker. Goodbchcrc, commission agent. Mortcnsens, jeweller. Woolams, chemist. Lnter. The premises of the Clothing Factory, Law, Butler, Whitelaw, Williamson and Fowles were owned by Hugh Williamson.

Goodbehero owned premises occupied by himself. ' Mortcnson and Wollam's shop was not destroyed, but damaged, and the fire was checked there.

Tho fire originated at the hack of Fowles' shop, apparently outside. With the exception of Grantham, Fowles and Williamson, most of the stock was removed, but largely damaged in removal.

The fact that two incipient fires were discovered in the same block last month lends color to suspicion that the fire was the result of an incendiary. This is most disastrous firo that has ever occuarcd here, being one of the principal blocks. Fielding, This Day. The insurance on Goodbeheres building is JE-">00 in tho Commercial Union. Whitclaws stock £l5O in National, lo;s £IOO above that.

Law's stock £l5O in Commercial Union.

Williamson's stock £3CO in Royal, £250 in Norwich Union, £l5O in Phoenix Building, and £250 in tho Standard. Ho is a considerable loser.

Bullcr, CIOO in Phccnix. Grantham, £250 in Commercial Union, Loss £3OO more.

Fowles, £4OO a building, £IOO on stock in New Now Zealand office.

Clothing Factory and Woollams not available.

Hughes (not "Williamson), owner of portion of buildings destroyed. Insured for £7OO in Fhrenix, loss £I,BOO above that estimated. The total damage is £IO,OOO.
