Several Australian Bushmen were wounded in the fighting at Grasfontcin, including the Queenslanders Sergt Strong fatally, Lieut Killaway, severely. At Eitchwartz Kopje, Corporal Buchanan was severely wounded, and Privates Kawson, Wilson and Holmes, were captured—all Queensland Bushmen.
Zand Drift is the only drift across the Orange River where mines aie not laid. De Wet was purposely drawn thither, the country having been denuded of horses The mobility of the British exceeds that of the enemy.
The Daily Mail’s correspondent states that De Wet was headed off between Strydenbnrg (40 miles north-west of Houtkraad) and Hopetoon, Half the force of De Wet’s camp mot and protested against indiscriminate dogging, chiefly of laggards. It was resolved to fight independently!
