PUBLIC ABATTOIRS.

(To the Editor.)

While they are squabbling over a Town Hall site, what about the Abattoir site ? Is it to be an Prestan road or out of iown ? I should think the people of Greymouth should have the say in that considering three or four thousand pounds are to be spent on it. Cowper street has had the scent bottle long enough, and I should say put it out of the borough, convenient to the railway line; if they are thinking of slaughtering stock for the country also. Preston Road will all be required for building sites before long and everybody cannot afford to pay £IOO for building sites in more fashionable parts of the town. No better spot can be found than out at Greenslade’s tannery, with a running ere* k straight out to sea, paddocks for stock, and plenty of fresh water. No doubt fie ground could be bought for the same in.mt-y as the Council will have to pay for other people’s property. When the Abbatoir is built it is built for ever, and Greymouth has none too much building room. I would ask the Councillors to think and consider well the interests of all before finally selecting the site. If it came to a vote Greymouth would vote to a man “out of the borough, pure air and fresh water, before Lagoon slush.” If we are to have health let us have it. Thanking you for the space Mr Editor, and hoping it is not wasted. lam etc., — Citizen. [Our correspondent gives a most valuable suggestion to our Councillors. Ed., E. S.]
