THE OVERLAND JOURNEY TO CHRISTCHURCH.
- The Hon. Hall-Jones, Minister of Public Works, informed a representative of the Lyttelton Times that fair progress is being made on the Springfield sections of the East and West Coast railway. He hopes that within eighteen months it will connect with the Coast coaches, thereby saving the climb over Porter’s Pass. Mr Hall-Jones could see no reason why the through journey from Christchurch to Hokitika should not then be made in one day. He will put in hand, as soon as possible, works beyond Staircase Gully, so as to connect at the earliest possible date with the coach road at the CasaEngineers are at work locating the tunnel through Arthur’s Pass. The Minister hopes that work on the formation between the present terminus of the line at Otira and the commencement of the tunnel will be started in about a month.
