London, January 18. Only 100 Colonials joined Kruitzinger's commando. Details of Colville's engagement show that during the inarch from New Denmark to Valaklaages, 700 Boers attacked the baggage guard, consisting of 300 of the Bifie Brigade and 40 Standerton Police. Simultaneously 300 Boers charged the Cavalry, constituting the rear-guard, and forced them back, but the enemy fled on seeing the bayonots. Oolville had one killed and 15 wounded. The New Zealanders defeated 800 Boers westward of Ventersburg. Twenty Boers jumped from the transport on arriving at Ceylon and took refuge on board a Russian steamer bound for Odessa.
