Cricket. Wellington, January 10. After lunch four wickets fell for an additional of only nine runs, then Hay and Marshall made a stand and are not out with 16 and 13 respectively. At 545 the score was eight wickets for 112 runs. The Federal Question. Christchrch, This Day. A Conference of Chambers of Commerce resolved in favor of Federation of New Zealand. The Wellington Chamber to draw up a constitution and bye-laws for distribution among the various Chambers for the approval. Sly Grog Selling. Dunedin, This Day. The police made a big raid on sly-grog sellers at Balclutha this morning. Eleven plain clothes constables entered in the direction on bicycles, five places were entered, and large quantities of grog were found. The names of the owners of the premises ara Vial, Railway Hotel, Bain, Farmers’ Arms, McDonnell, Criterian, Allen, Crown, Marshall’s lemonade and factory rumoured. A similar raid was made at Tapanni, Owaka, and Clinton. Suicide.
Auckland, January 10. The body of E. A. Burton, missing since December 20, has been discovered in the bush in the Mount Eden district. His throat was cut and a razor was found close to the body. Committed for Trial. At the Police Court James Miller appeared to answer a charge of having murdered his son Herbert Edward George Piper. Accused, who looked ill, appeared with his throat bandaged. The Crown prosecutor in outlining the facts stated that on December Bth accused cut his child’s throat and inflicted wounds on himself. He admitted the offence to his neighbours, and after being treated at the hospital was arrested on the charge of murder. After hearing the evidence the prisoner was committed for trial. Maori Election. Wellington, January 10. The result of the Native polling at Russell is: —Hone Hoke 101, Wapeta Henare nil, Pouka Parore nil, Eparaima 3, Kiri 9, Riapo nil. The final results have not yet reached the Acting-Premier
