Christchurch, This Day. At the Chamber of Commerce Confer* enco a motion respecting commercial reciprocity with the Australian Commonwealth was withdrawn, as the Conference is unwilling to express an opinion on the subject of Federation until furthor facts are before it. Eesolved that representations be made to the bank, authorities pointing ont the inconvenience of closing banks on nonpublic holidays. The Conference resolved to recommend to Government the advisability of an extended geological survey of the Buller coal-field, the consideration of the adjustment of railway haulage on the West-port-Mokihinui line, the defence of Westport Harbour, and the connection of that district with the general South Island railway system.
