POSTAL AND TELEGRAPH.

Wellington, January 8. There was an appreciable increase in the Post and Telegraph Ckristmas business for the four days ended 24th December last, compared with the business for the corresponding period of the previous year. At seventeen of the principal offices tho total number of postal articles dealt with during the four days was 1,990,575 as against 1,965,762 for the corresponding four days in 1899. The number of telegrams despatched and received was 88,880, an increase of 10,071. The business at the four principal offices will bo seen from tho following figures: — Auckland mail matter articles 429,029, telegrams 10,857; Wellington 385 ; 840 — 19,036 ; Christchurch 315,521 Dunedin 354,968 number of mail bags and hampers despatched and received at seventeen offices was 17,213 as against 16,565 last year.
