» (Per Press Association.) Masterton, Nov. 1. Mrs Sayers was committed for trial on the charge of performing an illegal operation upon Mrs Smith. Bail was allowed, accused in L2OO and two securities of Ll5O each. Hastings, Nov. 1. Mr Peter Ramsay, of Omahu, died on Saturday morning at the age of 60. He was one of the Black Watch, and came to New Zealand 35 years ago, and has been in Hawke's Bay nearly all the time since. The Maoris are holding a great tangi, as Mr Ramsay was a great friend of the natives. Deceased is to be buried with Masonic honors. Auckland, Nov. 2. There is a rush for claims at Whanga* ruru, near Whangaroi. Mr Clendon, S.M., wired to Mr Cadman that it was reported that a large reef near Whangaruru had been discovered, containing gold of the value of L4O per ton. At a meeting oi : the Trades and Labor Council a discussion took place as to the desirability of increasing the pay of the City Council employes and yards>men in the local mills. The former are paid 6s a day and the latter ss, the reason given being the rise in rent and the pay in other calllings. Dunkuin, Nov. 2. The Directors of the National Insurance Company recommend a payment of a dividend of ninepenca per share for the half- year, making a total of one shilling and sixpence per share for the year. Archdeacons Edward and Featon have resigned their positions. Nelson, Nov. 2. The ship Pleione, Capt. Sargent, from London arrived after a passage of 95 days. On the 3rd of October an A.B. named G. Smith, fell from aloft, breaking his leg in two places, and also one arm, besides sustaining internal injuries. He died next morning and was buried at sea. Assays of stone from a mineral belt near the city show that the oopper ore contains gold in fair quantities. From one lode the assay averaged six penny* weights of gold, which appears to be evenly distributed, while others go up to ten dwts of gold besides the copper. Ad* ditional men are being put on to prospect for further lodes and to open up kuown ones.
