• (Per Press Association.) Wellington, Oct. 1. It is stated the Hon. Mr T. H. Hislop, formerly of Oamaru will contest the Suburbs in the Opposition interest and Mr A. R. Atkinson, temperance advocate, will stand for the City. Auckland, Oct. 1. At a special meeting of the City Council the subxcommittees report re the electric tramways was adopted, but the fares altered to a maximum of 2d up to 8 p.m., 3d after 8 p.m. within the city boundaries. It being impossible for the Australian Roman Catholic Bishops to take part in the consecration of Bishop Lenihan to the See of Auckland on the date previously fixed, it has been decided to alter the date to November 15th, when it is expected three or four of the Australian Bishops will take part in the ceremonial. The delay is occasioned owing to the celebration of the Golden Jubilee of the Bishop of Tasmania. The New Zealand Bishops have signified the acquiescence to the alteration. Dunedin, October 1. Mr John Graham, chairman of the Taieri County Council, is definitely announced as a candidate for Taieri. Mr Jas. Wilson (of Bing, Harris and C0.,) has inaugurated his term as President of tbo Otago Cricket Association by donating 50 guineas for the advancement of cricket. Christchurch, Oct. 1. At a public meeting held at the Art Gallery this evening it was resolved to petition the Governor that in view of the Queen having attained a record reign in English history, Royal clemency should be extended to three prisoners undergoing life sentences. The prisoners are Louis Chemis, and two women convicted of infanticide, Annie Bryne and Sarah Flanagan. W. H. Spackman, a well-known lawyer and acclimatisation and angling enthusiast, died to-day.
