Harry Trott on the Third and Final Test Match.
At the close of the third test match between England and Australia, at Kennington Oval, Harry Trott was interviewed as to the game. The Australian captain said : — " We were fairly beaten ; there's no doubt about that. Of course the wicket was awful, certainly one of the worst we haye had during our present tour. Very few men could make runs on it. In my opinion, Peel never bowled better in his life ; and Hearne, too, was splendid. We began badly to-day by losing wickets so Boon at first, and that on a bad pitch is very discouraging to any eleven. It doesn't matter so much if the wicket is a fast one. Often in such a case a side loses men early, but that does not affect the others, because they go in and play a confident game as a rule. But when on a bad pitch two or three men are dismissed quickly, as to-day, the rest are frightened ; they go ' biffing ' at the ball, and don't play their proper game. But whut about Monday night ? Well, there, you see, the English team had a fine chance of making runs. I certainly thought they would put on 100 runs before stumps were drawn, and I put on men to bowl who could keep down the the runs." " Yes," said Trumble, who was present, " the wicket was very wet then, and no one could get any work on the ball." " Well," continued Trott, " the English played a winning game, and won, and although defeat is bitter, still we are satisfied. ''
