(Per Press Association.) Auckland. Sept. 28. At the Police Court to-day the charge against A. McKee of attempting to shoot Clough, postmaster at Te Aroho, in July last, was called. Mr McAlister, counsel for the Crown, said he weuld offer no evidence and the charge was dismissed. It is understood the reason the charge was not proceeded with is that accused is still subject to lunacy lawa and he is therefore not in a position to plead or answer the charge. Mr Cotter was present on behalf of the accused who did not appear. At the inquest on the body of Henry Smith found floating in the Harbour a verdict of found drowned was returned. Deceased was a colored man and an A.B. on the schooner " Norval " and was formerly in the " Clansman "schooner. Dunedin, Sept. 28. The body of Jessie Keast, an old lady, wife of A. C. Keast, at present in Australia, was found dead in her house at Bishop's Court to-day. She is believed to have been dead three or four days. Christchurch, Sept. 28. At a meeting of the (My Council tonight, the Royal Humane Society's medal and certificate were presented to Walter Johnston for bravery in Having life at the Spit, Napier. To-night the City Council passed a motion congratulating the Queen on her having reigned longer than any former English Sovereign. A verse of the National Anthem was sung by the Council after the motion was carried. Mr R. M. Taylor, a candidate for the City, opened the electoral campaign to night, The audience was stuuli. He did not aek for any vote. Wellington, Sept. 28. The first number of the new halfpenny daily evening called the Echo appeared to-day. It claims to be the first halfpenny paper in New Zealand, and announces itself independent in politics.
