AUSTRALIANS v. SUEREY. (Per Press Association^ London, August 19. The Surrey match was resumed today. The weather was fine, but the previous day's rain had rendered the wicket heavy. There was a larga attendance. At 2 p.m. the score was as follows : — Australians. — First innings. Darling, c Thompson b Lohrnann ... 81 Iredale, c Haves) b Richardson ... 38 Giffen, c Wood h Richardson ... 34 Trott, c Haves h /\bel 32 Graham, Ibw, b Haywnrd 11 Total for five wickets— 172. Later. The Australians are all out for 224. (Per Press Association). Sydney, August 19. The Cricket Association has cabled to Iredale : " Decided Wales members of the teum must return at the end of November. We play South Australia December 17." In the first test match the fairness of Jones' bowling was again questioned. The Times said :— " The fairness of Mr Jones' bowling has been widely questioned ever since the opening match at Sheffield Park, and the first ball that he sent down to Grace quite startled the members in the pavilion by its near resemblance to throwing. Mr Jones mended his ways after a while, but the umpires do not seem to lend much attention to the rule which says that, the ball must be bowled, ' not thrown or jerked.' " The Daily Chronicle said : — " Jones did not altogether satisfy the critical observer by his manner of delivery in his first over, but afterwards there was no occasion for cavil in this respect. . . . Hit fisst ball jumped up to the level of Grace's head, and the batsman, making a pro* tective lunge, narrowly escaped being caught behind the wicket. . . . He scarcely ever sent up a good length ball, and when he lost bis great pace, which he did later on, the batsmen played him with the utmost ease." Jones' first over was similarly commented upon by the Daily News, the Morning Post and the Standard.
