The Kirby Case.
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, August 11. In Kirby's case W. Bethane gave evidence as to the sale of a packing caee to A. J. Bassett (brother of the accused Bassets, who deposed, he purchased it at Kirby's request. David Lile, who took the case to the Talnne, deposed W. G. Bassett desired him to keep this side up. Ridley, assistant purser of the Talune, Cloake, neighbour of Bassett's, Forsyth, steward on the Talune, Martin Tide, surveyor in the Customs and Jas. Holliday, of the Union Company, gave unimportant evidence. Montague Lascelles, auctioneer, Napier, stated he drew a cheque (produced) for J3OO on 23rd May last m favor of Mrs Olive Bassett. Witntss handed the cheque to Mrs Kirby and was transacting business with her and had nothing to do with Kirby, who was in Wellington. Ed. Monntford. of Bank of New South Wales, said Kirby came to the Bank with the above-men-tioned cheque and asked if it was correct. Witness told him the cheque would have to be presented in Napier.
