The Effect of the Coal Strike.

The reports of the havoc being caused to the trade with New Zealand in Newcastle coal by the present strike receive confirmation from several letters received by Messrs Earp, Gillam, and Co. from clients of theirs in that colony. These write that their local coal is getting a strong footing in the home market. It will, they say, be a very difficult matter in a little while, unless the strike soon ends, to get Newcastle coal on the market. The Gas companies of Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Invercargill have entered into extensive contracts with the Now Zealand coal owners for all gas coal they require, giving as a reason that they must nourish the mines they have to rely upon, so that they may be independent of Newcastle and the frequent interruptions in its trade.
