The rental value of the rateable property within the Feilding Borough has been assessed at i' 15,128 10s for the financial year of IH9G-97, a rise of i.'469 14s above that of last year. This will give an increase of about i'oO in the general rates and about £25 in special rates. Of course this valuation is subject to alteration by the Assessment Court. The steamer Herman arrived at Hull from Libau the other day. and the master reported a terrible occurrence. The steamer had on board 100 emigrants. When the vessel was 10 hours out it was discovered that 15 men had stowed them selves away in a tank for a free passage to England. When their presence was discovered six of them were dead and most of the others were insensible, but upon being got out of the tank they recovered.— Exchange. A special meeting of members of the Feilding Polo Club was held at the Feilding Hotel last evening, when about a dozen members were present, Mr W. B. Giesen being in the chair. It was decided to enter one team only for the Junior Cup at the tovrnament to commence at Palmerstou N. on March 18th. The team will be composed of the following players : — Lewis, Gorton, Giesen and Pickering. The bicycle has been received with decided disfavour by the farmers in an Otago district. A draper's assistant recently speculated in a machine, and went round the farmers to collect orders for his firm. The farmers refused point blank to give him any. Complaints have reached the Government that, owing to the fact that men employed on cooperative worksareonly allowed to work 20 days a month, and owing also to the wet weather, some of the men have been unable to earn sufficient for the support of themselvos and families. In such cases, Cabinet have decided that it shall be within the power of Ministers to relax the conditions under which the men work, so that they may be enabled to increase their earnings to a sufficient extent. — Times. Tho following is from the Northern Daily Telegraph, published at Burnley, England : " Quito a sensation has been created among the teetotaller of Burnley by the visit of the Rev L. M. Isitfc, the New Zealand temperance i-erormev. He has made a marvellous impression in Burnley, as in other places, and he is regarded by a good many workers in the cause as the greatest temperance orator who has visited this country since the days of J. B. Cr Allau in thanking them for their kindly remarks said it was his intention to return to Feilding when he would endeavour to get a, seat in the Council again.
