' News from Abyssinia state* the Italians lost 4000. Great excitement ! prevails in the cities here and the troops j are confined to the barracks. Rioting has taken place in Milan. General Baratieri has been recalled and will be court-martialled. March 5. Signor Crispi has resigned, and his resignation has been accepted. Many cities demand that the war cease. In Pavia a mob demolished the railway plant, to prevent the soldiery leaving to ship for Abyssinia. Queen Victoria and the Emperors of Austria and Germany, have sent messages of sympathy to the King of Italy. General Baratieri declares he was under impossible orders, and as he was operating in hilly country the generals were beyond control. The Sboas and divided brigades forced their way up to the ranks aud killed 200 officers, and at one point they wore routed in great dis order. Baratieri's army was so handled that none of the three columns into which it was divided could assist each other. The total loss in killed and wounded exceeds 10,000 ; 72 cannons were captured and one entire brigade is still missing. General Baldisera, the new Com-mander-in-chief, has arrived at massowah, London. March 4. The Dutch Royal Prince has petitioned the King of Italy to be a allowed to accompany the Italian reinforcements, to Abyssinia.
