Nominations for the Sandon Hack Races close this evening. V..T.C. MEETING. (Per Press Association) Melbourne, February 29. The weather was gloriously fine for the opening day of the V.R.O. Autumn Meeting, yet it failed to attract more than an average attendance. The racing throughout was good, but the downfall of two pronounced favourites like Wallace and Hova caused a feeling of dissatisfaction amongst punters. In Wallace's case it was considered the jockey threw away whatever chance the colt had by laying so far behind Cabin Boy, evidently intent on watching Waterfall, and thus allowed the latter's stable companion to steal a inarch on him. Results : — Hopeful Stakes, 5 furlongs — Aroha and* Sayles a dead heat for first place ; The Black Rock a length away third. In the run off Aroha won by two lengths in lmin 4£sec. St. Leger Stakes, 1£ niiles, and 132 yards— Cabin Boy 1, Wallace 2, Hopeful 3. Three others starred. Betting 2 to 1 on Wallace, 3 tol against Waterfall, 12 to 1 Ilchester, 20 to 1 Kallara, Cabin Boy and O'Trigger. Cabin Boy took command and held a lead of twelve lengths on passing the stand, Kallara lying second, after whom came Ilchester, then Wallace, Waterfall, and O'Trigger. The ont-bider . improved his lead to twenty lengths as they turned out of the straight. Goughe, on the favorite, never attempted to move until approaching the six furlong post, and although Wallace traversed the last three-quarters of a mile in lmin 15£ sec,, he suffered defeat by three - quarters of a length, Waterfall fifteen lengths away third.
