A Steamer on Fire.

O (Per Press Association) Melbourne, This Day. The steamer Cintra, which left yesterday for West Australia, returned to Portland afire. The flames were discovered in forward hold when the vessel was thirty miles out, and her head was immediately turned to the shore, and the boats got in readiness for any emergency. The steamer Bulimba, which was in the vicinity, came to the assistance of the Cintra and took off some of the steerage passengers. The Cintra steamed to an anchorrge, and after three hours' fighting the flames were subdued. It is impossible to ascertain the amount of damage done, but between the fire and water it must be large. She bad 560 passengers on board, and considerable excitement prevailed, but they all behaved splendidly, especially the women, and no panic occurred. The outbreak is supposed to have been caused by stowaways smoking amongst the passengers luggage.
