APPOINTMENTS TO THE UPPER HOUSE.
TO THE EDITOB. Sir, — Kindly allow me to point out a statement made in your leading article of last Saturday's issue, re Mr Arkwright's qualifications for his late appointment to the Upper Honse. I refer to the words " and had the advantage of six years' experieuce in the House of Commons." This may indeed be a qualification and onght to be a good one in many cases, but Mr Axkwright's experience in the Commons was hardly a varied one. It is only a few years ago that our ever-popular and late-lamented member, Mr D. H. Macarthur, in an able speech at a political meeting held at the Assembly Rooms, Feilding, at which I myself was present, made reference to Mr Arkwright's career in the Commons. During that time, Mr Macarthur told us, he hadjonly spoken once, and this was a motion that the word " pasture " in a certain Bill then before the House be substituted for the word " grass." However, Mr Arkwright may have voted right, bnt this is not all one would expect from a man of his culture, and wide views, and especially from a member of such an important assembly as the English House of Commons ; and, in addition to this, he has not been what one wonld call a successful candidate out here fox our Lower House. Personally, I know he is held in high esteem by everybody, and rightly so ; but politically, No. ' I am, etc., Raymond P. Walsh.
