THE BELL TOWER.

TO THE EDITOK. Sib, — As the removal of this unsightly structure seems to be creating a considerable sensation amongst a certain class of the burgesses — (I mean those unsentimental persons who are indiffer. ent to appearances) — and as the question of its removal originated with myself — for which I shall no doubt.be duly anathematised by all those who object to its removal altogether — I think I should have a further say in the matter before it is finally decided upon. What led to my taking the matter up was the neglected condition of Manchester Square, the improvement of which I have so frequently advocated in your columns, and in doing so I invariably stipulated that part of the improvements should consist in the removal of the obnoxious tower, as must be very well known to your readers. What possible objection can be made to its removal, except as a mere whim, I am at a loss to imagine ( for it appears to me perfectly absurd to suppose that some suitable site cannot be found for it in some out-of-the-way corner of the town ; and as for the expense, I believe any builder would be glad to undertake it for a £10 note, or less (I have heard it said that M would do it), towards which the Council has already £& in hand— as yon and your readers very well know from the late correspondence which took place in your columns between Mr Saudilands and myself. After what has taken place in the Council respecting the removal of the tower, I cannot for a moment believe that that body will stultify itself by rescinding the resolutions respecting it — notwithstanding the threat of the resignation of the Fire Brigade in a body, nnless that course is adopted. I am, &c., Saml. Goodbehebe. Feilding, 20th December, 1895.
